VITAL Tutor Training

 

Volunteer Orientation is an hour and a half workshop providing information about volunteering at the Monroe County Public Library and VITAL, an overview of adult literacy issues, and the expectations of volunteers, learners, and staff involved. Orientation is offered monthly and is mandatory before volunteering in VITAL. 

Basic Literacy Tutor Training is a 3 part training series that provide tutors with the skills and resources needed to help struggling adult readers.  Sessions cover the components of language, characteristics of readers, and teaching techniques.  Tutors will meet one-on-one with the VITAL Coordinator once they have been matched to discuss goal setting, lesson planning, and resources best suited to each tutor learner match. 

English as a Second Language Tutor Training introduces language acquisition and the variety of ESL learner needs. Tutors learn techniques and activities to support a lner's reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Tutors will meet one-on-one with the VITAL Coordinator once they haveear been matched to discuss goal setting, lesson planning, and resources best suited to each tutor learner match. 

After initial training sessions, VITAL staff provide ongoing support and mentoring for tutors.

Additional Tutor Trainings covering specific subjects and techniques are offered periodically.  Trainings are posted on the VITAL calendar and tutors are notified of upcoming offerings.
