Anna Deremiah a new reader in the VITAL program and the new reader
representative on the VITAL Advisory Council recently attended the
Pro Literacy Conference in Tucson Arizona. She attended the conference
along with VITAL manager Cathy Rogers and fellow council member Sam
Kazdan. The following are a few of her reflections regarding the Pro
Literacy Conference.
“Cathy and I went to the conference Wednesday October 27th.
We had classes every day. There were a little over 800 people at
the conference.”
“One class I had was communicating with people and finding
out about them and how to get involved with them. Say “Hi”
when you see anybody with a conference nametag on. If you see somebody
eating alone, go eat with them, so they won’t be alone. A
lot of them walked up to me and started talking.”
“They showed us how to share what we were learning. We learned
how to sit down and write things down while you were being talked
to and how to put them into a letter the right way, in sentences
and stuff like that.”
“In the airport, when we arrived, we had an adventure. They
threw my suitcase on the turntable, and it went over the turntable
and burst open!”
“Altogether, it was very, very interesting.”
