Reflections on the ProLiteracy Conference

Anna Deremiah a new reader in the VITAL program and the new reader representative on the VITAL Advisory Council recently attended the Pro Literacy Conference in Tucson Arizona. She attended the conference along with VITAL manager Cathy Rogers and fellow council member Sam Kazdan. The following are a few of her reflections regarding the Pro Literacy Conference.

“Cathy and I went to the conference Wednesday October 27th. We had classes every day. There were a little over 800 people at the conference.”

“One class I had was communicating with people and finding out about them and how to get involved with them. Say “Hi” when you see anybody with a conference nametag on. If you see somebody eating alone, go eat with them, so they won’t be alone. A lot of them walked up to me and started talking.”

“They showed us how to share what we were learning. We learned how to sit down and write things down while you were being talked to and how to put them into a letter the right way, in sentences and stuff like that.”

“In the airport, when we arrived, we had an adventure. They threw my suitcase on the turntable, and it went over the turntable and burst open!”

“Altogether, it was very, very interesting.”

Do you have a something that you would like to share?

Does your learner enjoy writing or sharing stories? Perhaps your learner would enjoy seeing their own words in print. We are always looking for items from new writers.

Perhaps a Language Experience story the two of you have written together would make an interesting submission for the next VITAL Newsletter. “Writings from New Readers” features short articles of fiction or nonfiction, including how to instructions, recipes, Language Experience stories, and more. The writer’s name will be included only at the learner’s request.

Tutors and new readers are invited to share with others. If you have an item of iterest you would like to have included in the next newsletter let us know. We encourage new readers to share their writings here on the VITAL web site and in the VITAL Newsletter. Tutors are also encouraged to submit writings for inclusion here and in the VITAL Newsletter.
