Chiaverini, Jennifer - The Quilter's Apprentice
Sarah McClure takes a temporary job with Sylvia Compson, the owner of the once famous Elm Creek Manor, who is getting ready to sell the family estate. As part of the deal Sarah has Sylvia teach her how to make a quilt. The story of the history and ruin of Elm Creek Manor form the background of this story. This is the 1st book in a series of 12 books about Elm Creek Manor and the history of the quilts designed by the quilters who have inhabited it. The tone of the book is heartwarming and the pace is a leisurely trip through the past.

Dallas, Sandra - Alice's Tulips
Alice Bullock, a young wife and quilter, finds herself writing letters to her sister when her husband goes off to fight the Rebels in the U.S. Civil War. Alice tells of the difficulties of living on the farm with her mother-in-law and how she deals with her loneliness by working on quilts for the Sanitary Commission. The tone of this novel is both dramatic and heartwarming. The format of the book, written entirely in letters is unique and helps with the quick pacing.

Fowler, Earlene - Fool's Puzzle
Bennie Harper, Folk Museum curator, is trying to set up for a quilt show when one of the employees at the co-op is killed. She tries to help solve the mystery of the murder but keeps getting in the way of the new Chief of Police, Gabriel Ortiz. What she discovers leads to further understanding of how her husband died and the secrets that are kept in small towns. This is the first book in the Bennie Harper Mystery series of 13 books. The characters in this book are quite entertaining and the writing style is polished and professional

Mahon, Annette - An Ominous Death
The St. Rose Quilting Bee is working on another quilt and solving a mystery involving one of their own members. When Candy Breckner is transferred to the Palo Verde Care Center after breaking both of her legs she becomes worried about a possible “Angel of Death” that is coming after residents of the care facility. Maggie Brown and the other members of the quilting bee offer support and help solve the mystery. This book is the second in a series, but can be read out of sequence without ruining the storyline. The characters are interesting and the plot twists are fascinating

Pella, Judith - Bachelor's Puzzle
The women of Maintown, Oregon can hardly wait for the new preacher to come to town. He is young and unmarried. The mothers and daughters come up with the idea to make him a welcoming quilt. When Zack Harley arrives, he is like no preacher they have ever known. Although he preaches very well (memorizing another minister’s sermons), he seems to be more helpful outside the pulpit then in. This is the first in the Patchwork Circle Series. The characters in this novel are heartwarmingly endearing. The author of the novel is a quilter and this lends to the authenticity of the sewing scenes.

Richards, Emilie - Wedding Ring
Three generations of women from one family find themselves thrown together for the summer. Tessa, the daughter, is taking a step away from her marriage to see if it is worth saving. Nancy, the mother, is caught in the middle and isn’t quite sure what she is supposed to be. Helen, the grandmother, holds on to her possessions because she feels that it’s all she has. Will the wedding ring quilt, pieced by Helen, quilted by Nancy, and restored by Tessa bring them together? This book has wonderful characters. The multiple story lines keep the pace moving.

Snelling, Lauraine - The Hearing Quilt
The quilt in this novel is a quilt that will be auctioned off to raise money for a new mammography unit. When Kit Cooper’s Aunt Teza has a recurrence of breast cancer, she realizes that something needs to be done. With her aunt and four other women, they create a quilt and share their lives with each other. The small town setting and relationships between the characters will draw you in until you finish this quick paced novel.

Sullivan, Kathlyn - Uncoverings 2005 Volume 26 of the Research Papers of the American Quilt Study Group
(746.46 Unc) This book is one of a series of books dealing with factual knowledge of quilts, quilters, and quilting. This particular volume tells of family quilts made in the 1800’s, and in the 1960’s. The Amish quilting tradition is also reported and also slave quilts from the south. A history of the sewing machine and its uses in quilting is also given. This book contains many historical pieces of information and makes for fascinating reading.
