The Web Address:

Every web page has a unique address called a uniform resource locator (URL). The last part of a URL is a code (e.g. .com) which may tell you the type of organization hosting the web site.

Some Top-Level Domains:

.com = commercial enterprise
www.cnn.com

.org = organization
www.seniorcybernet.org

.edu = educational institution
www.indiana.edu

.gov = government
www.medicare.gov

.coop = cooperatives
www.bloomingfoods.coop

.mil = military
www.army.mil

.us = region (United States)
www.bloomington.in.us

Keep in Mind

  1. Anyone can register for a .com, .net, or .org domain.

  2. Many companies, brands, and celebrities are encouraged to register all these domains to protect their interests. (Cocacola.org, coke.org, and coke.net are URLs registered by Coke.com.)

  3. A tilde (~) used after domain can indicate personal web page (e.g. www.indiana.edu/~Rominov).

  4. Here is a list of country codes. Tuvalu, a small, developing country has sold its domain name (.tv), click here for the story.
