Rubber

The first thing I want to tell you about Rubber, directed and written by Quentin Dupieux, is that I really wanted to hate this film. I mean it, I really wanted to hate the film; but I couldn't. I first heard about this film ferrying a group of teenagers back from Holiday World. Two of them were talking about this strange film called Rubber about a tire, named Robert that comes to life, discovers he has mental powers that can cause things, including people, to explode. Sounds like a great idea for a film doesn't it? But for some reason, I just couldn't stop watching it. It was beautifully filmed and just weird- weird enough to retain my interest. There is more to the story than just the tire, but I really can't tell you about it, to do so would ruin the weirdness.

Rubber is not going to be everyone's cup of tea and it really could stand to be about 15 minutes shorter, but for those looking for something different and unusual you just might enjoy it. Others of you will think it was a complete waste of time ...and you would be right as well. There is so much I want to tell you about why I liked Rubber, but doing so would almost guarantee you wouldn't like it. Why do I say this? Because if I tell you something happened, when you watch the film you would expect it. You would say to yourself "This is that part where ____ happens." (pause) "Man that was dumb, it wasn't even funny." But if you don't know it's going to happen you will watch that part and go, "Man, that was just weird," (Pause) "Kind of funny ...dumb, but weird, Huh! Why did they do that? There was no reason for that." I would encourage you to be brave, don't read the reviews on Amazon.com, or go to the Internet Movie Data Base or anywhere on the internet to find out more about this film. Don't even watch the trailer. Watch it knowing nothing more than what the back of the box says, "When Robert, a tire, discovers his destructive telepathic powers, he soon sets his sights on a desert town; in particular, a mysterious woman becomes his obsession." And enjoy ...or hate.
