Rubber

Image
The first thing I want to tell you about Rubber, directed and written by Quentin Dupieux, is that I really wanted to hate this film. I mean it, I really wanted to hate the film; but I couldn't. Read more »

The Prisoner

Image
In the late 60's we were in the Vietnam War and the Cold War with Russia still seemed like a serious threat. Spy shows and movies like the James Bond series and the Man from U.N.C.L.E. were popular. Patrick McGoohan was an actor in one of the more popular ones known as Danger Man in Great Britain and Secret Agent Man in the U.S. and he asked himself a question; "What would happen if an agent with very sensitive knowledge should resign from the service without giving a clear reason for his doing so?"

Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State

Image
This six part documentary produced by the BBC looks not only at the horrors that took place in Auschwitz; but at the developments, both political and technological that resulted in what many consider the worst of all the Nazi internment camps -- Auschwitz, along with its immediate aftereffects. I can't say that this documentary was a pleasure to watch but it was educational, important, and horrific. Read more »

The Apostle

ImageThe Apostle is one of the first of a small genre of films that I sometimes call "Christian Films for non-Christians." I define this genre as films that are well written, well acted and well produced. They are willing to accept a PG-13, or even an R rating, but have at their base a message of faith while showing both the best and worst in people they feature. Read more »

Fido

ImageBack in the days of B&W TV, when I was growing up, there were two shows that I remember watching quite a bit. Leave It To Beaver and Lassie. Today I find both laughable, but still entertaining for different reasons. Read more »

Without A Clue

Image I've often wondered what Michael Caine would have done if he had been given the part of Sherlock Holmes. Without A Clue doesn't answer that question. It does, however, give me an idea what he would look like playing Sherlock Holmes. Instead Without a Clue answers a question I didn't even know I had. Read more »

Confessions of a Superhero

Image

They hang out on Hollywood Boulevard and if you vacation near there you are likely to meet them and partake of their services. Their costumes are usually colorful and flamboyant. They are hard to resist. Each one leaves their home in the morning not knowing how much money they will make. A bad day could net them as little as ten to thirty dollars, a good day as much as five or six hundred.

We're No Angels

Image
We're No Angels possesses perhaps the dryest humor of any movie I've ever seen. The film stars Humphrey Bogart as Joseph, Aldo Ray as Albert and Peter Ustinov as Jules escaped criminals from Devil's Island prison and passing themselves off as convict workers until they escape from the island onto a passing ship. In an effort to hide themselves they work for an inept storekeeper and his family. For some unknown reason they take a shine to the family and help them through both their financial and personal problems. They are aided in their efforts by their companion Adolphe, a small Eastern Coral Snake kept as a pet by Albert. Read more »

3D or not to 3D

Image
A while back I posted an article on this blog called "In Praise of Black and White." In it I mentioned that the invention of color film brought about a number of films that focused on color shock effects and explosions rather than focusing on the story. I believe that many of the films made today would not seem as good to us if we were forced to watch them in black and white. Today we have a rise in another new gimmick format called 3D. Read more »

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Image
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first put Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in my DVD player. It was not even close to what I got. For those who are not familiar with the plot Scott Pilgrim [Michael Cera], the bass player in a small band, has fallen for the new "cool girl" in town, Ramona Flowers [Mary Elizabeth Winstead]. In order to date her he must first defeat her seven "evil exes". Read more »
